Possible Complications of LASIK Eye Correction

Going through surgery means that you have to often prepare for, or at least research for, the worst.  There isn't any kind of surgery that does not have some nasty complications.  If you are thinking about going through surgery, then it is a good

idea to learn as much as you can.  This is still the case for procedures that keep you awake, such as LASIK eye surgery.  When trying to decide if this surgery is right for you, it is best to research everything that can go wrong, in addition to all of the positive things that can come from an optical surgery such as this.

LASIK eye correction is really very simple.  A surgeon works on your eyes (by cutting into them with a laser) in order to permanently improve your sight.  This is a great option for people who would otherwise need to wear glasses or contacts in order to see the simplest thing.  If this sounds like you, then you may want to go through with this surgery.  After all, dealing with glasses and contacts can be really annoying.  Not only do you have to worry about keeping your glasses safe so that they don't break, but they are often very expensive.  It is common to spend $250 to $500 on one pair of frames and lenses.  That isn't even including the doctor's visit.  While you may have health insurance that includes an eye exam, this rarely covers enough of the bill for the frame and lenses.  In the end, you are paying a lot for this service every other year.  While LASIK eye surgery can be a bit expensive, you need to remember that it is permanent.  You will never have to go through this procedure, or get another pair of glasses, ever again.

While this may sound amazing, wait before rushing to your local eye surgeon.  There are complications that you need to be aware of.  Not everyone goes through these complications.  They are actually quite rare.  It is better to know about them since there is still a small chance that something could go wrong during your LASIK eye correction surgery.  First, you need to know that the worst case scenario for a surgery like this is complete loss of eyesight.  This is very rare, though.  Surgeons now know what kind of people are at risk for this, and they refuse to work on people that may have this kind of complication.

Not all of the complications of LASIK eye surgery are permanent.  For instance, some people experience double vision after their surgery.  This is relatively normal and shouldn't last more than a few weeks.  Others will experience a severe case of dry eyes.  This can get rather annoying for some people, but this will also go away with time.  If you are worried about the possible side effects, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor.  They will have better information for you based on their own experience with these procedures.  They may even have a pamphlet or two for you to read to get better informed about the process.

While there are complications, they are rare.  Although you should think of these when you try to decide if the surgery is right for you, they shouldn't be the only thing that affects your decision.  Think of all of the money you will save throughout your life when you don't have to bother with glasses anymore.  You should also gauge the fact that having perfect eyesight can free you up for a lot of amazing things, and you will never have to worry about forgetting your glasses.
