Double Vision and Other Complications of LASIK Surgery

Are you trying to decide whether LASIK eye surgery is right for you?  This can be a difficult decision for many reasons.  For one thing, you need to weigh whether or not the surgery is even worth it.  You also need to be sure that it is worth the risk.

There are several serious complications of this popular eye surgery, and it is a good idea to learn of them all.  This way, you will be much more well informed.  You will be able to make your decision much easier this way.

Although it does help a lot of people, LASIK eye surgery is not for everyone.  For starters, you need to be a bit brave in order to go through with this.  Laser eye surgery is a newer technology.  Researchers, scientists, and surgeons don't yet know the full long term side effects of the surgery.  With each passing year, they do know more, though.  Still, since this surgery is new, you need to be able to handle that idea if you want to get the surgery.  Also, while the procedure is short, it can be a bit scary.  Unlike some surgeries, you won't be put under for this.  The only anesthetic they will use is a local medication to numb your eyes.  Otherwise, you will be awake for everything.  Since the surgery is done on your eye, you will see it all happen.  This can be scary for a lot of people.  If this thought unnerves you, then this procedure may not be right for you.

There are a lot of people who are eager to get this procedure done.  After all, once the surgery is over, you won't have to wear glasses ever again.  Your vision will be perfect, and this is a permanent procedure.  Not only will your eyesight be better, but you will also save a lot of money in the long run by avoiding the purchase of glasses or contact lenses every few years.  Before you go jumping at the opportunity, you should learn a bit about the possible complications.  While most people go through the surgery without any problems, bad things can still happen.  In the worst case scenario, you could possibly completely lose your vision.  This happens when your cornea, the clear part of your eye that acts like a lens, is too thin.  Luckily, most doctors will notice this before the surgery and will avoid doing the procedure.

Some of the side effects that are a part of the LASIK risks are not permanent.  One of the more common of these is double vision.  Double vision is a complication of LASIK eye surgery where your vision is blurred in such a way that it looks like you are seeing double.  This can be a bit annoying and can even hinder your driving ability.  Fortunately, most patients who experience double vision have the condition fade after a few weeks.  If you have this and it hasn't yet subsided after a month, it's a good idea to visit your surgeon for a checkup.  While it is rare, this can be a permanent affect.  The surgeon may need to do one more surgery in order to correct it.

Although there are LASIK risks, there are also really good things about this surgery.  You would end up saving a lot of money in the long run by avoiding buying glasses.  Having perfect vision can be a real boon.  You should still consider these complications when you make your decision to get the surgery, though.  This will help you decide if the procedure is right for you.
