The Possible Long Term Effects of LASIK Eye Surgery

Typically, when you are trying to decide if a procedure is right for you, you need to weigh all of the options.  The more you know about the side effects, the easier time you will have knowing if it is right for you.  This is the case with any type of optional surgery.

In addition to complications, you also need to learn about the long term affects of the procedure.  Unfortunately with newer technologies, you won't always be able to know about these long term effects.  Because of this, getting the surgery acts as a bit of a risk for you if you do go through with it.  One of the surgeries like this is LASIK eye surgery.  This is a laser technology that lets you have perfect, permanent vision.  While it does work for a lot of people, scientists don't yet know about the long term side effects.

LASIK vision correction is actually pretty new.  It's become a very popular way to fix vision because of the permanency of the procedure.  It is also popular because it is a super short procedure.  From start to finish it only takes about a half an hour to be done.  The main goal is improving your vision, so the surgeon starts by cutting open the cornea of your eye.  The cornea is the clear part that acts as a lens.  They cut this open using either a machine or a laser.  The cornea is cut into a circle that isn't quite connected.  This creates a flap that is then flipped back so that the surgeon has access to the inner area of the cornea.  They then use another laser to vaporize parts of this area.  By doing this, they are perfecting the cornea so that it fixes your vision.  They then replace the flap and you're all done.

As you can probably tell, this surgery is very unique.  It has only been a popular procedure for the last decade.  Since it is so new, most of the doctors and researchers working on the technology don't know what it will be like in the long run.  Although this may be the case, every year that goes by, these doctors know more and more.  So far, they have found that there are no terrible or detrimental long term side effects of the surgery.  While this is the case for now, they still don't know how it will react for longer periods of time.

Since the future is fairly uncertain for LASIK vision correction, this is a procedure best left for those that aren't afraid to take a risk.  If you still want to go through with the surgery, even knowing that they don't yet know all of the long term side effects, then this type of surgery may be right for you.  Although they don't know about the long term affects, there is some research involved in the more immediate possible complications.  You should still learn as much as you can about these before you make your decision.  Then, you will know for sure if this method is right for you.

Deciding on surgery can be hard.  The best way to know for sure if you should do it is to weigh all of your options.  Are you happy with your glasses or contacts?  If so, and if you are fine with paying for them every few years, then you may not want to go through with the surgery.  Then again,  if you are sick of having to deal with those glasses, and would rather have perfect vision on your own, LASIK eye surgery is a good choice.
